Herbivores sea urchin (Diadema antillarum) play a key role in reef systems by controlling macro-algae growth. About 30 years ago, sea urchin populations on coral reefs of the Dutch Caribbean Islands St. Eustatius and Saba collapsed. Currently researchers of van Hall Larenstein are investigating potential measures to promote the re-establishment of sea urchins on the coral reefs. The researchers aimed to develop methods that promote settling of sea urchin larvae on coral reefs in early life phases. To do this, researchers are investigating how biochemical signalling and various structures can be used to promote settling on the reefs. For the research, the researchers asked ZEBCARE to deliver a raceway with an certain continuous internal flow.
